ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A notorious Kurdish member of the Islamic State, or ISIS, who was known by the nickname “Mina PKC” after the Russian machine gun was killed last week in an airstrike, according to posts on social media affiliated with the jihadists.
A statement allegedly posted by ISIS on Wednesday confirmed that Muhammad Amin Ibrahim of Iranian Kurdistan was killed during a bombing raid carried out by the US-led coalition in Salahadin province on July 2.
According to the source, Ibrahim had spent two years in Afghanistan and Pakistan before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. He was arrested on the Iranian border attempting to enter from Pakistan en route to Iran. After two years in prison, he was set free by Iranian authorities.
Ibrahim soon joined ISIS in Syria and was sent to the city of Mosul. He reportedly became part of the Salahadin Brigade, a Mosul-based unit of Kurds fighting for ISIS.
The social media posts described him as being inside a vehicle that was destroyed by an airstrike in Salahadin province.
